Made to OrderPenang Island’s Sole Songkok Maker
Lebuh King, George Town.
The tiny songkok-shop he runs is not something to boast about but the fact that Haja Mohideen OSM Mohd Shariff is the sole songkok-maker on Penang island, is.
Inheriting the shop and (of course, the skill) from his late father, Haja Mohideen started out by helping his father at the shop after school. From sewing the base of the songkok (a traditional Malay headgear), a simple task reserved for novices, he soon progressed to become a songkok “professional”.
Despite having the paper qualifications to secure a more stable job, the young apprentice decided to follow in his father’s footsteps. After all, he was the son of the man who practically founded the songkok-making business in the 1930s!
Haja Mohideen makes the songkok himself – from cutting the velvet cloth to sewing the base and putting all the materials together, he does it all. This, of course, means that he sometimes has to stay up past midnight to get the orders ready especially during the Hari Raya season and Maulidur Rasul celebration. After all, no outfit is complete without the traditional songkok!
Besides the usual songkok, he also sells the custom-made tarbus (higher and more rounded compared with the ubiquitous songkok) at his shop. Such orders are usually received from cultural performers.
Whether you want your songkok higher or wider, he makes sure the fit and design is just right. Although orders for his hand-made songkok have dwindled with the times, Haja Mohideen continues to champion this fading art.
Because it is his pride and passion, the 61-year-old works almost non-stop, producing an average of five songkoks a day. His shop is usually open from 11am to midnight. In fact, the only time you will find him away from his “songkok studio” is during Friday prayer time!

SONGKOK VENTILATION
SYSTEM
The idea to invent this product is inspired from the problem of wearing ‘songkok’ for a long period. Normally, after we wear ‘songkok’ for
a certain period, the area inside ‘songkok’ becomes humid and hot and this will make the head feel itchy and uncomfortable. Even though
the current design of ‘songkok’ has 2, 3 or 4 holes for ventilation, but this is not enough and sometimes the users still feel hot and uncomfortable.
In order to avoid this, the designer has designed a ‘songkok’ that is equipped with a small fan to provide a good ventilation system
to the ‘songkok’. After surveys have been done, it is found that there is no invented product in the market similar to this yet. Therefore,
initiative has been taken to invent it and hopefully it will give benefits and can be commercialized soon. The system comprises a small
fan, a mini switch, 4 AAA size batteries and socket that attached to a normal two or four holes ‘songkok’.

Company keeps ‘songkok tinggi’ tradition alive
By FARIK ZOLKEPLI
JOHOR BARU: The classic Johor songkok tinggi (tall songkok) is much sought after, especially during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri season.
Mohd Fahirurazi Yahya, 27, said the songkok tinggi is typical to Johor.
“Many of Johor’s Malay leaders wore the songkok to symbolise the state’s Malay history.
“Our songkok is unique as it is taller than the songkok normally worn by Malays,” he said when met at the Ramadan bazaar in Taman Suria here yesterday.
Fahirurazi, who runs the Sinar Songkok Melayu company, said his father Yahya Lajib, 55, started the business in Felda Kahang Barat in Kluang some 20 years ago.
They now have several shops in Kluang and elsewhere in Johor as well as a stall at the bazaar.
Stall’s specialty: Fahirurazi showing his merchandise at the Ramadan bazaar yesterday.
“Not many people make this songkok. We even have loyal customers from Singapore who love the songkok as they think it is different and unique,” he said.
The songkok Fahirurazi makes comes in various heights, from 11.4cm to the tallest at 14cm.They are made from the best quality velvet.
He said his stall at the bazaar would be open until the eve of Hari Raya as demand was good.
“We are used to last-minute shoppers. We sold about 200 songkok tinggi last year,” he said.
Fahirurazi said the company has also started selling another type of hat, the fez, to test the response from customers.
“The fez is very popular in Arabic countries. We want to see the response from Malaysians,” he said.

Artikel 4: Ketelitian Si Pembuatnya
Sumber: http://beliapasarminggu.blogspot.com/
'Tak lapuk dek hujan, tak lekang dek panas'.
Menariknya, setiap kali Aidilfitri menjelma, songkok pasti menjadi pilihan.
